Subbing in GCS
When The Teacher’s Edge was working on programming in the fall of 2021, it became abundantly clear that there was one big area where help was needed and that was in subbing in GCS. With numbers being reported of anywhere from 5 to 20 teachers out at a time, it was no wonder that teachers did not have the time or energy to attend social events at night. Amanda quickly got to work on getting through the GCS application process and started subbing on September 21, 2021. to date, she has subbed in 50 classrooms (not counting any extra open periods where she covered for teachers without subs. She has worked in kindergarten through 12th grade, across almost every subject area, and ranging, geographically from southern Guilford all the way east and west and into the greater Greensboro area. There are still major shortages in subs, but GCS is trying to sweeten the pot with bonuses. Our first monthly meet-up was a huge success! Thanks to our generous sponsor, Paresh Gala, this event was 100% free for all teachers! This included the painting supplies and instruction as well as all of our snacks and beverages. Teachers commented, “This is what I needed!” And ”I just love being able to be around other teachers.” We know that nobody gets us the way that we do, so we are working to make this available more often and for any teacher who needs it. We couldn’t do any of this work without the generosity of our community. It really makes a difference to live and work in a community that celebrates our educators!
Kickball 2021
A Rocking Summer!
We kicked off our programming (literally) with a fun summer of kickball with the Rockers in High Point. Every week we came together, teachers and community members to play against other High Point teams! This was not only a great way for teachers to relax and unwind each week, but it also allowed community members to learn more about the role teachers play in our community. And we all came together at the end of the night for icing those sore muscles, eating a hot dog, and enjoying a cold drink on the patio at the beautiful Rockers stadium!
